I went into a store that sold sandals and other shoes. There was an old man behind the counter talking to a customer. So I stood off to the side and waited my turn. The owner asked me if I was the security guard he was talking to. I jokingly said yes.
After a few minutes they finished and he realized I wasn't with the first man. He felt a little uncomfortable with his question. So he asked me what I was looking for. I told him I was looking for a strap for a rubber sandal.
His wife, who was a few feet behind him, quickly approached, said yes, and went to get the product. I told her the color and she asked for the number of the sandal. He took it and gave it to me. I asked him the price and went to his master to pay.
As I was paying, I asked the man if he was Syrian because he had an Arabic accent. He said no, he was Palestinian. I asked him if he was Muslim and if he spoke Arabic. He answered both questions in the affirmative.
Since I'm very curious - but not a gossip - I asked him if there was a mosque in town. He said yes; immediately his wife intervened and explained where it was. It seemed to me that she was anxious to conserve her husband's energy by exercising his capacity for verbal expression. I added that I had visited one in another city. It was beautiful, well maintained, and the people were helpful.
I paid for it, but as I was heading for the door, I took a few steps back and asked him about the conflict in Gaza; if there would ever be peace there.
He answered with certainty that there would be.
His wife was not involved. Was this an issue for men only in the Muslim world? I didn't dare go into that intimacy.
I asked another question about when it would be. He said soon, in 2025.
Another question, what would it be like? He said that one country would be destroyed and the other would reign in glory.
When I asked which one would be destroyed, he said of course it would be Israel. I interjected, "Really? He said, yes, God willing.
The question is, which God is going to win? Whether the God of the Jews, who blesses them with the victory of the supremacy of the Israeli armed forces, or the God of the Muslims, who destroys the Jews and gives the Palestinians a taste of getting a supposedly free territory, independent of the various foreign and non-Islamic war and political forces.
Let's wait for next year to see if his words are prophetic or just verbalized patriotic and religious desires. 10/26/2024
